Hatching

Don was watering our ficus this morning and happened upon this wondrous scene...

The tiniest of baby grasshoppers! They were about a quarter of an inch long (if I could find a darn tape measure I could tell you for sure...). So neat.

Since this is a picture post, here are a couple of Hoagie looking cute.

Sick, Hot, and Lazy

Like most people, I really look forward to holidays. I have to say, with much disappointment, that Labor Day this year was horrible. It was 107 degrees outside, and, according to our neat little we*ther ch*nnel pop up, supposedly felt like 109. They might as well have said "and feels like the fiery pits of hell."That might have been more accurate. We could have gone to the beach, but being a holiday weekend, we didn't feel like dealing with the crowds.* Instead we lounged around inside (we are sooooo thankful for our central air) and in our backyard crammed into the four foot diameter swimmy pool. Logan was bored silly with being inside so much during the day and also came down with a small cold. I picked up some sort of nasty stomach thing, but that only lasted a day. We are now on the mend and the temperature has dropped to a pleasing 85.

The boy learned to say "eye" over the weekend, but his language skills are pretty limited overall. He has words, but he doesn't use them much and the rate of learning new ones has slowed. Yeah, I am inwardly (bloggingly) concerned, but not anywhere near freaking out. He has a Pedi appt coming up shortly, so I will discuss this with her. Ok, he is saying "rock" and "clock" once and a while too. I forgot those...

Can you believe Hoagie is a year and a half? A year and a half! I feel like this is not even possible, but it is true. He is really enjoying his books and his dinosaur puzzle (thanks Aunt C and Uncle G!). He broke our alarm clock (luckily a replacement arrived the next day) and is obsessed with looking at himself in our mirrored closet doors. I think he finds himself endlessly fascinating and handsome, just like we do. He has also recently insisted on feeding himself pretty much everything. Very messy, but nice to see.

Last night we were about to run an errand and Logan needed a shirt. We were in our living room and Don asked him to please go get a shirt from his bedroom and bring it back. He looked at us for a second then trotted off to his room. We took guesses as to what he would bring back. I said he would bring some sort of toy and Don guessed a book (optimistic that he would return at all). Instead he brought us a crib sheet. Much closer to a shirt than either of us expected! He had to open a drawer to get it (which he closed behind him), and he was given an impossible task since he can't even see into the drawer that holds his clothes. We thought that was pretty cool.

*The beach is a nightmare on holiday weekends normally, but this one was total madness because of the heat. There was a huge brawl at Pacific Beach where 16 people were arrested, and a co-worker sold his Mission Beach parking spot at 2pm for $150. Yup, that's right folks, $150 for an afternoon parking spot on the street. We are glad we opted to stay home.

Unexpected stillness

We have a weekend routine that is working really well for us. It will have to be altered some when Don starts Saturday classes in a few weeks (don't get me started on how unhappy we are about this, however they can't be avoided), but currently things are great. Don gets up with the boy on Saturday and I sleep in until 8 or so. The responsibilities are reversed on Sunday.

Sometimes I don't want to get up early simply because I love sleeping in. And by sleeping in, I mean getting up after 6:30. It's really hit or miss with the boy as to what time our morning will begin. Don got lucky a few days last week and Hoagie slept until 7:30. This is unheard of. He totally has my morning person personality, and I love him for it. As a girl, I used to turn my clock radio forward (the kind with the flippy numbers) until my allowed wake-up time so I could go get my parents early. I have a feeling he will be the same. As an adult 5:30 really isn't that great. It's dark out, you probably stayed up later than 7:30 pm, and nothing is open. Even the cat is still sleeping. Try telling that to a toddler though and he won't care.

So Saturday night I told Don that he needed to get up on Sunday because of his recent good luck and extra sleep (never mind that it was his birthday and all). I was half kidding and feeling guilty that I wasn't gung-ho about spending time with Logan in the wee morning hours.

Well, I am glad I didn't shirk my duties because Sunday morning my child (yes! my child!) cuddled with me voluntarily. It was glorious and he was mostly still. This is quite a feat for our "always busy" boy. He also brought me two books to read and he sat on my lap for almost all of them. He has no need for endings, I guess he likes a cliffhanger.

Anyway, I thought this wonderful morning should be recorded in history, as who knows when the cuddling will repeat itself. The books are becoming a steady thing, but the snuggles? They are fleeting. And it makes them all the more special. *swoon*

Norther

Ok, before I blog about about Maine, I am instructed to tell you that Don Jr actually won the mini golf game. He was very put out that I would congratulate Don Sr and myself for our holes in one (which in my opinion are way cooler) than his win. Um, someone wins EVERY game. Holes in one are not guarenteed. But I digress...

Maine was so relaxing. I feel like my parents have been there forever, which they haven't. They have only been there three summers now, and NH feels like a world away. The new cottage is superior in so many ways, not the least of which is that it is close to much of my family. We saw cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, more cousins, and longtime friends. We are so lucky that many traveled long distances to see us, and the only dark spot on the visit was that we missed Miss C and her mom B (hope she is long past her stomach bug!).

Not surprisingly, Logan learned the word "boat" while we were there. Despite the annoying life vest, he enjoyed standing on the party boat and had a good time busying himself on it when it was parked.

We were super busy every day socializing and visiting family, but it was all so laid back that it wasn't too much. Most notably we saw a five act play put on for us by my friend S' children that culminated in a kissing scene. Who knew they would stage a romance? We loved it. Another highlight was seeing my grandparents and Logan's immediate love for them. He really took to them instantly. It was lovely to watch, but made me a little sad that he was not able to meet Shirley's mom before she passed last fall.

great granparent love

Logan was introduced to my Uncle K's garage, which holds many little people treasures. I am not sure who had more fun, K or Logan. Either way, they were both entertained leaving Don and I to socialize with the other big people and drink yummy margaritas. Fun for all!

Uncle Kens Wagon

We had a fantastic lobster roll lunch on the coast (where L dipped his hand into the atlantic ocean, making him truly bi-costal) on the last day. I can't believe the woman who took this picture actually got us all smiling as L was acting like a complete grump/monster and my dad was on the verge of a horrible cold.

Browns

My cousin M was about to head off to college (And has now since left, good luck M! We are so excited for you!!!) and we were lucky to see him and meet his girlfriend S. I rode on the jetski with my cousin K and we had a great dinner, culminating in birthday pie for Don. He is now 36! 36! Old man. Hee hee!

Happy birthday Don-36

And because he's cute, here is L in the water.

There and back again

We're home!

We had a wonderful time and miss everyone already. We started our east coast tour in the Poconos at Lake Harmony. The place was perfect (though a bit dated, I think the Poconos heyday was in the 80s) and the weather was good. We even heard/saw a late night electrical storm! Such a treat, as you know SD has very little weather variation. *sigh* Rough life. Don's parents treated us like royalty and we did lots of interesting stuff.

We visited Don's brother and his family in Central PA. We met the girl for the first time. She is SOOOOOOO cute! So cute. Very serious, just like Logan. She even scrunches her nose and gives the same look he does. Logan loved being around another little person and was generous with his hugs. He also loved Katie's toy collection. It was great to see them and their house. They have made many improvements since we were there for the wedding five years ago (gulp!).

Masses

We saw Boulder Field, on a rain day no less, and it was so cool. Logan checked it out from the Ergo and gave his stoic gaze of approval.

We played mini golf (the resort had a HARD course on site) where Don Sr. and I both got holes in one. Woo hoo! There was no gloating though...

Don hole in one

We went into Jim Thorpe where we rode the railroad that has restored 1920s cars. It was so beautiful and Logan loved it. Unfortunatley, you are going to have to take my word for it since al the pictures were lost. *crying silently* We stopped at the Jim Thorpe memorial on the way back as well, which was the highlight of the trip for my father in law. Many pictures were taken to commemorate the event, and, again, were all lost. Logan cried the whole way home, maybe he knew the pics were going to be lost in advance.

The traveling parts went relatively well, much much much better than I envisioned. I was kind of dreading the trip--not the seeing people part, but the traveling hours on a plane with a toddler part. Logan was great. He slept, ate, and was in general good humor most of the time. Who can ask for more?

I will post the second part in a bit, familial duties call...

Virtually the only way I can do it...

Can I just tell you how much I love the idea of a virtual shower? I think they should all be like that so I (selfishly) would never have to attend another torture-fest in person. But, shockingly, this post is not about me.

To Bri, Wes, and TK...I know I float about the edges of the IVP, but your story and struggles have been a part of my life. I hope you know how many people you have touched with your openness and honesty. I wish you the most emotionally freeing birth, excellent bonding with TK, and a deeper love between the two of you. I know you are scared, and nothing I say is going to make it go away, but it is just a small moment of your relationship. An important one, to be sure, but fleeting really in the scope of things.

Enough of that, bring on the virtual presents! I notice you haven't really gotten any virtual things. Which is the best sort of present for those undergoing major home renovations. So here is a rocker from Modern Tots that I will go out on a limb and say you and Wes might like. Don and I fancy ourselves a little modern too, and happy to see someone living our dream. To TK I present the Olga Rocker...

Bolts

So much to report:

  • We have been doing tons of stuff since Don is out of school. It is much easier to get out with two adults. And we only have one kid! I can't imagine wrangling a bunch, but obviously it can be done. We have been to the zoo, the beach twice, and the pool. Last night we went to a Charger's practice. It was fun (and free!) and we got to see our favorite players up close. The trip was almost foiled by the distance of our parking space to the event, but we persevered. Logan made a couple friends and enjoyed the cheering, which is a nice change from last year

  • The boy is starting to really understand simple commands. "Take off your hat," "Get the ball," "Come here," etc. can be followed when he chooses. It is pretty cool that he comprehends this information. Two weeks ago he wouldn't have known what we were talking about.

  • "Yeah" This word just started today and it is universal in its usage. Mostly he uses it correctly though. Too cute.

  • The pucker. He is going to melt hearts. He has the funniest kissy pucker I have ever seen.

  • Teeth. Yes, they are still coming (swear this one has been going on for over a month) and are wreaking havoc with the sleeping. Naps are in flux. Just in time for our big trip!

  • I am in denial that we are traveling to the east coast. In just a few days. Gulp!

Prey

Sunshine is a hunter! When I was pregnant, she got outside right before bedtime and caught a mouse. She dropped it in what was to become Logan's nursery, but at the time was a wasteland of boxes and yet-to-be put together furniture. It took us about an hour to catch the darn thing and we were able to get it outside alive. Sunshine was then banned from going out after dark.

Well, Don and I were enjoying the cool night air last week and she was outside with us. We haven't been quite as rigid with our "no outside after dark" rule since we moved into the new place, and she has been taking advantage. I saw her focus on something in the front and then dart after it. I noted to Don that I thought she might be stalking something, but, silly me, I didn't think she would actually catch it. Wrong. Sunshine ran back toward us and Don yelled, "She caught something! It's in her mouth! Don't let her in!" I was waaaaay too slow, and only served to make her run faster toward our bedroom. We found her under our bed with a small animal under her paw that looked like a bird.

We shooed her out of the room (in retrospect, this might have been a mistake, as she could have helped us catch the thing), and used our broom to get said "bird" out from under the bed. Then Don looked at me and said, "I think it is a lizard." Oh, my heart sunk. Mammals I can handle. Birds? No problem. Reptiles not so much. They really creep me out. I knew Don was going to be even more freaked (he detests snakes, so I figured this was just the same) so it fell to me to catch it. It went behind my magazine carrier so I moved it out and screamed, "It's a SNAKE!!!" Not my finest hour. It really did look like a snake, and a nasty one at that. Don flew around the bed, grabbed the trash can, and trapped the animal. It really was an alligator lizard after all, but it was pretty big. Maybe 7-8 inches long and fat. Ugh. Don totally stepped up and I so didn't. Unfortunately, the reptile didn't survive the encounter, and Sunshine was mighty pissed that we took her toy away. Logan slept through the whole thing.

The day after

The party has come and gone. It went well for the most part and the turnout was good. I wish we would have had more food, which usually isn't a problem for us, but this time we didn't estimate correctly. Oh well. Logan enjoyed playing with the older kids and was totally over stimulated. He slept past 8 the next morning! Unheard of. My sangria turned out pretty good and Don grilled like a champ. We got a bunch of new plants as housewarming presents, hooray! They are all so pretty.

Sunday was a waste. Poor Logan was completely bored as Don and I crashed. He was very happy at daycare yesterday, I am sure he was thrilled to be doing stuff again. I took him to the local community pool for the first time in the afternoon and we had fun. He decided that he didn't want me to hold him after a while, but, alas, he is not ready for that yet. I have to sign him up for swimmy lessons, but all the slots conflicted with our August vacation so I couldn't do it this summer. Hopefully in the fall it will work out.

I turned 32 yesterday and it was pretty low key. We really didn't do much of anything besides the pool and I liked it that way. H is going to babysit next week so we can go out to dinner. That will combine my birthday with Don's "school's out for summer" celebration. Two for one! We have a few plans for the weekend, but are mostly looking forward to doing a whole lot of nothing special. So exciting, eh?

Here are belated pics...

Busy busy

We are in full prep mode for tomorrow's party. So far we have:
  • New shelf in the living room
  • Pictures matted, framed, and hung all over the house
  • Two new shelves in the bedroom
  • New curtains in the bedroom
  • New hardware in the bathrooms
  • New doorknobs on all inside doors
  • Unpacked more breakables (that we can't put out due to one wee family member)
  • Drawings in Logan's room
And outside...
  • New hummingbird feeder and post
  • Tablecloth on outdoor table
  • Trimmed Dogwood
  • Mowed, raked, and whacked lawn

Whew! Don's tired... (hee hee! I participated too...)

Logan's motto is "a new day, a new bruise." He bumped his head, has bruises on his leg, and seems to get more by the minute. Little bodies are amazing in their accident tolerance levels. He has also started hitting. Did I mention the hitting? He only does it to me. Not Ms. T, not Don, just me. Booo! I am seriously not liking this turn of events. I am using a consistent method to curb this behavior, but dang, who wants to get wailed on every day?

Not to jinx it or anything, but he also fell asleep the last two nights right away with no crying at all. Heaven!

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Hmmm. I can't make a title for some reason. That will get fixed later.

I know I haven't posted in a while, but we have had paci withdrawl, crazy work, new computers, a summer cold, and a variety of weird occurances. Lame, I know.

We did get a grill and Don is very happy now. The fourth was spent at H & M's new house and we could see fireworks from their backyard. It was lovely. We are doing all sorts of sprucing up to the house since we are having a big party on Saturday. Neighbors, coworkers, and friends are all coming to celebrate. Hooray!

Logan is doing great. He is dancing like crazy, no longer using the paci, loves the outdoors, and is working on a fake laugh that has us giggling every time he does it. He has added a few words to the list including:
  • what's that
  • door
  • ball
  • bird
  • Tere (Ms. T)
  • Te (M, Ms. T's daughter)
Please note that there is still no word for me. No mom, mum, ma--nothing. I get eh eh eh. So special.

Pictures soon, I know it has been a while.

A huge congrats *late post*

My cousin E and his new wife L were married two weekends ago, and my other cousin S and his new wife D were married last weekend. I wish them all the best and I hope they grow together and continually learn from one another. Both couples are extremely happy and I am only sorry that we didn't get to attend either event.

I can honestly say that my marriage to Don has made me a much better person. Weddings always make me all mushy for my beloved and these are no exception. He is a great dad, caring partner, gifted teacher, and wonderful friend. I feel lucky to be the one he chose. *swoon* Ok, yeah, this was supposed to be about my cousins and their new wives...

End of an era

Well, Ms T felt that Logan could lose the pacifier any time. He only uses it for naps and bedtime, so it isn't like he is totally attached to it. I had been waffling getting rid of said paci, but only for my own selfish reasons.Like wanting to sleep. This weekend we bit the bullet and got rid of the plastic sucker for good. I have to say that it went much easier than I expected. He has a little bit of trouble with going down, but overall it has really been painless. Night wakings were nonexistent, which was a huge relief. He did cry out a few times, especially in the early morning, but nothing that required going in and settling him. I think it was actually better than usual. Let's see if it lasts. Next is the bottle. Yes, he is still on the bottle. We are taking things one step at a time.

I joined a local evenings and weekends Mom's group and went on my first outing. We walked around Lake Murray Sunday morning and I met 5 moms. It was great! One mom lives within 100 yards of our house. Hooray! I am all about making mom friends. It is high time I start building a support network for myself, as I am sorely lacking socially. It was getting downright depressing, but things are looking up.

Logan has added "doggy," "nose," and "shoe" to his vocab. He can find his ears, mouth, nose, and eyes. Every day he does a belly button check on me and Don--we think it is just to make sure we (still?) are human. He really loves that belly button. He also learned to push buttons this weekend with consistency. Pretty neat.

We went to the beach on Saturday and it was so windy. I didn't have a great time but Don and Logan seemed to enjoy it immensely (despite Don getting peed on, our swimmy diapers were too small--oops!). I don't know which part Hoagie liked more, the sand or the water. Either way, he was covered in both when we left. I hope next weekend is a little nicer so we can spend more time there.

Other than that life is just chugging along. I am having one of "those" days, but I am hoping that the afternoon will turn around. Positive thinking, right?

The latest

Ah! So much to report. I will do bullets so I don't miss anything...
  • Logan has figured out how to spin around and make himself dizzy. It is pretty funny, especially when he tries to do it sitting down.
  • On Thursday nights La Mesa holds an old car show right off our street. Last week was the first one and it was so cool! We ran into another family from the neighborhood and it was fun to hang out with them for a bit. They have a"wagon" that looks like an old VW Bus. It is really neat, but looks like a workout to pull around. Logan was kind of serious as he took it all in.

    2007 06 11 019
  • We walked to a co-worker's house on Friday just to see the outside. She was out front and was kind enough to invite us in -- it is AMAZING. So neat with a mish-mash of funky styles. We also met her whole family as they all come over on Fridays for dinner. We were invited to stay, but Logan had skipped his afternoon nap and we feared a spectacular meltdown that would leave us permanently uninvited so we declined. I am happy to say that we will be going back very soon.
  • The stucco repair is done! Hooray! Don cranked it out like a champ and it looks nice. He said he swore a lot, but we couldn't hear him so I don't think it counts.
  • This blog is officially a year old. Oh, how time flies. I can't believe I have stuck with this, I thought it might fall by the wayside when I first started. Glad it is a source of information for those of you far, far away.
  • I talked with S on the phone last night! It was great and we had much catching up to do. As usual it was like we just talked yesterday. Lucky for Don she lives far away or I might just ditch him and marry her instead (of course we would have to move to MA).
  • Logan puked twice yesterday. That kid has a strong gag reflex. Figures, I can barely tolerate puke, so this is the universe telling me to get over myself. Or not let him put so much in his mouth.
  • We saw the craziest scene when walking around Lake Murray last weekend. We came upon a lizard on the path and a squirrel a few feet away. I stopped to look at the lizard and Don noticed a baby rattlesnake inches away in the grass. A small creature trifecta! I took a picture with my phone, but didn't get the squirrel. You will just have to believe it was there, and evidently only around to witness some drama. Silly rodent.

15

Can you believe Hoagie is 15 months? Amazing. I compare him to a batch of babies that were born on time, which means they are currently 13 months, about to turn 14. So weird that he is ahead. In a short time this difference won't matter, but right now it seems like quite a jump. To commemorate 15 I figured why not do a list of the things he likes right now.

Books: That he likes books at all is so wonderful. For a long time he would squirm away because books were apparently too boring. This broke my heart,as I am an avid reader (That book you left mom, you know the mystery/school shooting one? It is terrible! I am suffering through, but cursing you along the way.) and I wanted Logan to like reading as much as me. Anyway, he is now interested and had definite preferences. Right now (and this could change tonight) he likes Five little ducks, The wheels on the bus, Mr. Brown goes moo (still), Splash!, I love you through and through, Hug, Cleo the Cat, and Kiss good night. We read all of these before bed.

Food: Yo baby yogurt, American Chop Suey (my version), pickles, strawberries, pineapple, pear, oatmeal, olives, tomato and basil hummus, salmon, mashed potatoes, fish, and sometimes grilled cheese sandwiches.Really he likes anything. We are lucky and I fully expect this to change.

Toys: Boxes of any kind (why do we even buy the toys?), Sunshine (does she count?), any shoe he can get his hands on, the watering can, the fancy watering hose nozzle I bought Don, and anything that Don and I have--especially travel coffee mugs (I have to give him his own "coffee" on weekend mornings or he totally melts down with envy).

Sleep: He's doing it. From 7:15 pm-ish till 6 am-ish straight. He naps twice a day (for now) equaling at least another 2 hours. Very little getting up unless there is teething. Speaking of which...

Teeth: He has five. Three on top with another one s-l-o-w-l-y making it's way out, and two on the bottom. Not looking forward to eye teeth or molars.

Words: Well, there aren't too many yet, but he did start saying "uh oh" when he drops stuff. So we have balloon, hi, zsa zsa (which is sounding more and more like Sunshine), light, thank you, daddy, and mum. Oh, and ball sometimes. And he has said no once or twice. Really the last bunch are very sporadic, so they don't count so much. But he does say them. Mum only when he is really upset, and light is only understandable by me and Don. He does a TON of pointing and is really interested in hearing what things are. When you ask him to take items out of his mouth while he is walking he will comply, and he understands both yes and no (can shake his head for both). He also understands hi and bye and will wave. All in all he is so darn cute.Hooray for 15!

Phasing out

A frightening new situation has appeared in the land of Hoagie--nap refusal. I am loathe to admit that he may give up that morning nap sometime soon. Actually, it would be easier to go out and do things as a family if he drops the nap, but I fear the process could get dicey. He skipped the afternoon one yesterday and was in rare form by 6:20. Poor kid, poor parents.

I left Don to deal with bedtime and went to an Indigo Girls concert last night with a delightful group of ladies. Fun was had by all and I only wish that they were playing again tonight so I could see them one more time this year. The last IG concert I attended was right before I got pregnant with Logan. I think that is a sign (um, a good one I mean). Not to sound too hokey, but I have loved them since high school and their music has helped me through many a tough time. I have seen them with beloved friends and remember dancing to them at bars, parties, concerts, and weddings. They hold a special place indeed. Yay for fabulous music!

New week again

Alas the weekend is over and we are back to the grind. The stucco went well enough, though there isn't any actual stucco on the hole yet. Turns out there was more prep than we were anticipating. I was totally correct about the cursing though, Don dipped well into his extensive dirty word vocab while chipping away at our outside wall. Next weekend we will spend Saturday arm-deep in quick-set stucco. Woo hoo!

Logan had a very busy weekend. Saturday he went for an early morning stroll, then he was rudely awoken from his nap to catch the Flag Day Parade. He watched with all seriousness and we think he had a good time. It was kind of hard to tell... He really liked the Pug and St. Bernard rescue groups, cause you know, animals are fascinating. Clowns, old men riding around in little cars, bands, drum lines, and waving ladies were only so-so in comparison.

Later on he went to the beach with Don for dad-to-be's Man Show-er, where he played in the sand and refereed a very intense volleyball game. Then he went out to eat at a local brew pub where he ate like a king. I think he had more of my meal than I did.

Sunday Hoagie hung out with me while Don did the above mentioned swearing. We had a good time despite a nasty fall that left the poor boy with a(nother) H*rry P*tter scar. All in all it was a great weekend. Unfortunately, it went by waaaaaaay too fast. I am still in disbelief that it is Monday, despite having gone to work and come back home.

One last item of note: I run into old JNI coworkers EVERYWHERE. I saw three this weekend alone. So bizarre, I haven't been working there in almost four years(!) so it isn't like I still run in those circles, or even that the company still exists. Weird.

Huh?

One of the wonderful benefits of living a block away from a cute Main Street is that we have a prime location for all local events such as street fairs, fests, farmer's markets, and parades. But one has to scratch their head when a parade takes place almost two weeks prior to the actual day it is celebrating. And the holiday, you ask? Flag day! Hmmmm...ok...

Now I must admit that Flag Day holds a very special place in my heart as it is also Beckie M**** Day in the state of Rhode Island. My wonderful friend won a national poster contest and the Governor of the state actually declared June 14th to be her special day. Amazing!!! Unfortunately, that very same day went on to hold a much sadder anniversary for her and her family, so it is bittersweet. Nonetheless, while acknowledging the grief that surrounds the date, I like to celebrate BMD with gusto. So a parade is perfect! Now I have to work on getting her in the parade somehow. A Mistress of Ceremonies perhaps? Waving politely from a borrowed convertible? Most excellent.

TGIF

Friday, sweet Friday. I can hardly wait to have Logan crawl all over us in bed tomorrow morning, that is one of my favorite parts of the day.

We are set for a wild weekend of stucco repair, so I think that means I will be watching Logan while Don curses endlessly at our outside wall. Please cross your fingers that it turns out well and actually matches what is currently there. I am slightly nervous that it will look "patchy."

Logan has started saying "thank you." Well, we recognize the words, but I am not sure they are decipherable to anyone who isn't in the know. It is so neat to hear him learning new things. His favorite books right now are 5 little ducks and the wheels on the bus. Really, anything with singing. I think he tries to sing every once in a while, but for the most part is a very attentive and appreciative listener.

In big milestone news, we are no longer bouncing the kid on the exercise ball to get him to sleep. My back is all messed up from holding him on it because he is so big. I think parental pain is as good a reason as any to ditch the ball. Last night I rocked him in the chair while he drank his milk and then put him down awake. I had no expectations for immediate sleep, but I was pleasantly surprised by his ability to drift off completely on his own. Hooray! I seriously thought this day would never come. I mean, I dreamt about it for sure, but the reality? Never.

I have a baby shower to go to tomorrow. Wish me luck, I think I would rather gnaw my hand off than attend, but I said yes before thinking. I like all those who will be there, I just hate baby showers. And the games. Ugh, don't get me started...

When toddlers attack

We decided to go out to purchase a magazine last night at our local big bookstore. We had an hour before bedtime and no plans so it seemed like perfect timing. Unfortunately, the magazine we were looking for (the one with the stucco repair dad) was not there, so Hoagie and I headed off to the children's section. Oh the delights of the children's section! Hoagie could hardly contain himself. It was pretty empty and he was enthralled with the large train set that was set up in the corner. Another couple headed over with their two boys (one about 4 and the other around 2, plus one on the way) and the younger of the two had a major meltdown. Like monumental shrieking that would have sent me right back out the door to put my kid to bed. Alas, these parents decided the kid should play at the train table with his brother and Logan. As you are probably aware, a one year old has almost no sense of things belonging to someone else. Very, very little. So he tried to take the older brother's trains and I herded him away several times. The parents of the other kids were nice enough and we traded quips on what it will be like to add their expected child into the mix. Then Logan made a most dire mistake. He grabbed the younger boy's train. The shrieking! The yelling! In no time at all the boy had Logan around the neck and was strangling him. Well, not seriously, but enough to scare the pants off of our boy and send him into hysterics. I intervened along with the other parents and we left the train table. The strangler's parents apologized profusely and no one was worse for the wear. Personally, I would have left the store then if my kid had done that to someone else, but (you may detect a theme here) they decided to stay. We left as it was Hoagie's bedtime and many more apologies were offered. So that was our first experience with a physical altercation between our kid and another. Don assures me that I didn't freak out, even though I felt like my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head when I saw that little boy's hands around my son's neck. I think I said something like "Oh no, we don't do that!" so how bad could I have sounded? I always second guess myself when I am talking to or correcting other people's children. I wonder how T deals with it at daycare? I have much to learn today when I pick up the kid.

Oh my

A coworker just had her fourth child. Fourth! She is a well-oiled mother machine, and sailed through her pregnancy with apparently little drama despite dealing with some issues that would have sent me over the edge. Today she brought her two week old into work.

Oh my.

I am in desperate need of snuggling a newborn! Desperate I tell you! My uterus swelled with desire and my hormones swooned. Luckily my head is still on relatively straight, but dang that urge is powerful.

Logan was walking around last night with his hands in his pants pockets. Seriously, it was the cutest thing ever. Don said he was channeling his Pop-pop Boyko and all he needed was a little change to jingle.

Pics!

mmmmmm

Wow

It's been a long time.

But we're back! And doing well! With words!

New to our ears--balloon and daddy. No mama anywhere in sight. *sigh* We are quite impressed with balloon's two syllables, and he also calls Sunshine zsa zsa. We hear that one A LOT.

Logan is walking like crazy, so much that I had to buy him shoes. He loves them so much that he asked to wear them this morning. We tried them out at the local playground where he had a great time. We met some neighborhood kids (including triplets) who loved playing ice cream and flower stand. Both are much to complex to describe here, but let's just say we had fun with bark and leaves. I even met two moms! This is quite a breakthrough for me.

The renovation came and went, and phase 1 is complete. A window was moved and it looks fantastic. I have during pictures that I will post. My dad found some nasty wood paneling and some baaaaad faux brick wallpaper under the sheet rock. Thank g-d they covered that crap up. Next will be installing french doors. Woo hoo! Should be done by winter 2015.

Don's last night class is this Tuesday and I am wildly excited. Don 7 nights a week will be a welcome change. Now that The Office and Gilmore Girls is over I don't have Tues/Thurs obligations and I am ready for bedtime help. That, and I don't eat dinner on those nights because I am too lazy to make myself anything. Did I really just type that out? I did. Sad confession.

So there are about 8 million other things to catch up on, but here a video to smooth things over...

Hi, baby

We have words! Well only two words, hi and baby. He also makes a kissing noise and just today started puckering up for kisses (a big improvement over the open mouth tongue out technique he has usually).

We went out for pizza today and he said "hi" to a group of grumpy men who wouldn't acknowledge him and to a young woman who was kind enough to say "hi" back. Baby isn't consistent, but Ms. T is always telling the other kids to be careful of him because he is the baby. So, he has picked it up. He is also walking EVERYWHERE, which made the pizza dinner very, um, busy. We won't be going out again anytime soon.

He also just popped two new teeth. The teething is consistent and constant. Poor kid. Luckily the sleeping hasn't suffered too much (*knocking on wood*).

Our kitchen is undergoing major renovations next week so I will post before, during, and after pictures. My dad will be doing the work, so at least we can trust the contractor...

Before, after, and mobility

Don has been doing lots of work in the "yard" out front. I must admit that I was a naysayer, I really didn't think he had a plan for the plants. I knew he was excited to do stuff, so I thought he was going forward with the planting a bit hastily (is that a word?). I was wrong, he did a great job.

I only helped a little, so I can take no credit for the transformation. Except I did suggest using the red mulch to differentiate the space up top. So yay me for that one.

In Hoagie news, he started walking on Thursday. The evidence is below.

Hoo Hoo

We were reading Mr. Brown Can Moo tonight and when we got to the page with the owl (He can sound like an owl... Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo), Logan let out his own little hoo hoo. It was so darn cute, and, quite frankly, the first verbal communication we have seen that indicated he could put words to comprehension. It made his mama happy.

A couple of other things:

Yogurt=vomit
Alphabet bus=happiness
outdoors=heaven
teething=insanely slow

He is so close to walking, but won't stand if we let go. I refuse to predict when it will happen anymore since he clearly doesn't like the pressure.

Pictures tomorrow, as it has been forever since I posted any. You may have forgotten what he looks like by now...

And, Hoagie wishes his great grampa a very very happy birthday! We all wish we could be there to celebrate with you. Hugs and kisses from the west coast!

Weaned

Logan has self-weaned. He nursed for the last time at the doctor's office on Monday. It had always been a tough, hard earned relationship, but it got so much better the last few months. He was never the type of kid who asked to nurse, ever. I feel lucky, proud, and frankly amazed that we got to this point, but also sad that it is over. Last week I was forcing the night nursing (I know, I'm crazy) then realized I was doing it for me and not for him. *sigh* Being a mom is so hard sometimes.

Also sad is how quickly my boobs returned to their former (minuscule) size. Blah.

A small recap:
  • Nurse at NICU with little tube attached to a syringe and nipple shield
  • Visit lactation consultants and ditch the finger feeding
  • Wash those stupid shields with limited hot water due to pipe issue at condo
  • Lived through nursing a squirmy reflux baby
  • Ditched the shield and nursing goes smoothly (ah, short-lived bliss)
  • Nursing becomes possible only when I am not talking and we are bounding on the exercise ball
  • Nursing possible only when no one is talking, white noise on, bouncing on the ball, and Logan is sleepy
  • Keep this routine up for 6 months
  • Stop pumping
  • Start using impressive (if I do say so myself) frozen stash of breastmilk with regularity
  • Nursing dwindles and so does stash
  • Logan nurses for the last time and stash depleted almost simultaneously
  • Don unplugs deep freezer and I cry

Backyard

We have one! And we worked on it this weekend. I trimmed branches and Don put bamboo up around the gnarly fences. We bought a new patio set and put it together (and oiled it) without a single argument. Amazing!

Hoagie very much enjoyed himself in the yard, managing to find small things to put in his mouth everywhere. Sunshine also had a great time, she is in heaven.

On the inside, we got the bedroom, bathrooms, kitchen, and spare bedroom cleaned up. We are t-i-r-e-d.

Happy belated birthday to my mom, we wish we could have been there to celebrate with you!

Moved

It's over. It went smoothly. We are living in chaos. But we are at the new house!!!!!!!!!! It seems so surreal and I am still trying to grasp the change, but we actually bought a house. We also bought baby gates and they are causing another bout of chaos, but I think both the move and the barriers will prove positive in the end.

Logan has been doing just fine, but he did have a moment of "um, can you please put me in my REAL room?" last night. Poor kid. He also has 3 lovely bruises on his head from various incidents. How can he get so many injuries on carpet? We went for a walk to the local grocery store yesterday (less than 4 blocks away!) and he very much enjoyed the trip. I am amazed at his charisma, I think we are in trouble. He is such a happy kid and (of course) so cute. People are always stopping us to make comments about what a sweet boy he is. I am very thankful to the universe for sending me this little man, and as much as I would like to take credit for his stunning personality, I fear I have very little influence over it. Another teacher who sends her son to Ms. T was saying that the Hoagie is the happiest baby she has ever met. This teacher told Don that she HAS to meet me because I must be the most laid back person ever. HAHAHAHA! Wouldn't she be disappointed?

L has a new face that is pretty funny. I will try to get a picture of it today. We can all bask in his cuteness together.

Sold

Holy cow. The condo is sold. As in no longer owned by us. Escrow has closed and money is about to be transferred *fingers crossed sooooooo hard for this one.* We are renters for the first time in 6+ years, but only for two short days. Please send positive thoughts our way for these two crazy days. Aye! Moving is stressful, but the payoff, oh it will be good. Woot!

In other "send positive thoughts" news, please direct your attention over to Babycakes, where a new little life is about to emerge. We here at Logie the Hoagie are truly exited for the Babycakes gals and hope everything goes perfectly with LB's arrival. Love from the west coast girls!

And because I know I will be disappointing the masses if I don't give a small Logan update, he is standing more on his own, and is doing great with the packing. Especially the part where he gets to play in all the empty cupboards and drawers with his measuring cup. Which, by the way, is his favorite thing right now. Who knew measuring cups would be so beloved?

Aaaaaand, one last but certainly not least thing, Happy Birthday Great Grammy Brown! We hope your day was wonderful and we wish we could have been there to celebrate with you. Much love!

Bathroom humor

Oh it was a wild weekend of packing and small repair work here in San Diego. Luckily we got lots accomplished and Logan was only slightly ignored. He did very much enjoy the exersaucer down in the garage, as he had never been down there before (you know, to spend any time). Once Sunday night rolled around, we were all a bit slap happy. Which led to the following two events--which are both, unfortunately, funny at Don's expense.

First, Logan needed a bath and Don decided to join him. I got Hoagie ready and brought him into the bathroom with just his diaper on (to avoid any accidents you know). I took said diaper off right in front of the tub and Don lifted him in. As I was wrapping up the diaper I noticed it looked, um, darkish, and I said to Don, "you know, you really didn't do a very good job wiping himmm ............... OH NO! POOP! There is POOP in the TUB!" Yes, we put a poopy kid into the tub with Daddy. I had to scoop the offending patty(s) out with my bare hands, and Don ended up with it smeared on his leg. Logan was none the wiser. He was just enjoying the show ("Poop? Really? I hadn't noticed.... hee hee hee!"). I was laughing so hard I could barely catch my breath. I mean, you know as a parent that things like this are going to happen, but I was unprepared for the hilarity. I love a good potty joke. Once things calmed down everyone was rinsed off, the tub refilled, and a good time was had by all.

Later on Don decided to cut his hair (!) ,which he mostly does by himself with the clippers. I usually come in just at the end to do some clean up. Last night, when I was called in for my part, I noticed his hair was shorter than usual. He looked at me and said "I am using a #1 guide instead of #2." And I think, ok, whatever you want. Then he turns his head. There is a wide patch on the side of his head that is shaved CLOSE. Evidently, he was doing his side burns and forgot that he didn't have a guide on and just kept going up into his hair. But he didn't want it that short because, well, it is really short. So we tried to disguise it, but the chances are pretty good some tyke at school today will notice Mr. M's weird hair and ask what happened. Luckily hair grows in fast, so this will be a memory in no time.

I really hope these aren't "you had to be there" type stories. They were sooooo funny at the time and I am glad there is now a record of them for Logie to look back upon. I am sure he will be so grateful.

They say they come in pairs

After massive teething action while the grandparents were visiting, another tooth is popping. Guess that's why feeding him was an absolute CHORE yesterday. Hhmmm....

In other news we are living among boxes and continue to pack for the big move. I know Sunshine will fare the worst for this adventure, and she is starting to show the stress already. For example she dug a hole in our area rug last night. Luckily it isn't too noticeable, and the coffee table will cover it, but I foresee a series of unhappy acting out incidents. Poor baby.

No, stabbing

First, here is proof Logan is learning how to express himself. Yes is also in the works...

Second, I stabbed him today with my thumbnail. I just missed his eye. Scary close. Ouch! And to add insult to injury he also had vaccines today and pinched his finger in our dresser. Wow. I am so getting that mom of the year plaque now. I can't even bear to take a picture of the injury--it looks really bad. Hopefully tomorrow it will be better, cause you know, I did this to him just in time for my parents to see it. They arrive on Wednesday.

Comparison

Then

Mom with Logan in NICU

Now

OneYear

One

I love one. One is so happy, loud, busy, curious, and sweet. One is nursing better than ever before and is eating like a champ. One is fascinated with shoes and anything Mom and Dad are holding. One likes to drink out of cups even though very little water actually goes in the mouth. One loves the outdoors and cheerios. One wakes up and smiles at us when we enter the room. One entertains himself in the crib with his toys. One has an obsession with the dishwasher that I can't explain. One is also very into the vacuum, and I can only hope it stays this way. One still loves Sunshine more than anything else in this world. One thinks Mom has a wonderful voice, especially when singing Old MacDonald. One will go by too fast. One's sloppy kisses will give way to neat pecks on the mouth and silly giggles will eventually become eye rolls. But right now, one is the best ever and today we will celebrate.

Happy One Logan.

Breakthrough

A little tiny bit of a tooth broke through. Pictures to come when he lets me look at it.

A little from column A, a little from column B

First, Evite does not recognize the word evite in its spell check. Doesn't that seem odd?

Second, not to jinx things as it can all fall apart at any time, buuuuuuuut, the condo is in escrow! That's right, I said ESCROW!!!!!!!!!! Hooray! 30 days till close. Gulp! We are all wildly excited and hopeful (cautiously optimistic) here at casa Masse-Brown.

Third, Nana will be pleased to hear that Logan is doing "Soooooooo big!" like a champ! We didn't do it for a while so it was like teaching him from scratch, but he got it! And now he loves it. I will take a video soon. We are now working on identifying where his nose is. It is slow going...

Fourth, the last boss I had at JNI (I had soooo many bosses there) passed away yesterday. Not long ago he was a healthy man in his mid 50s. He went in about a year and a half ago for a routine colon operation and ended up with contamination from the procedure. He endured 7 months of surgeries and rehab, and seemed to be on the road to recovery. Unfortunately he had some serious issues around Christmas time and went downhill fast. I hadn't spoken with him since I went to a reunion thing a while back, so I never saw what he looked like after his medical battles. I am glad I have a vital image of him in my mind. My heart goes out to his family, who has certainly been through more than I can ever imagine.

Never again.

Never again will I ever live in a home with white tile floors. I swear I clean them 5 times a day. And I don't clean! Babies are messy. It's maddening. Not the messy baby part, the "everything shows up on white tile" part, just to clarify.

Rollin'

Hoagie went bowling yesterday. I am happy to proclaim the event a success. We were thinking of a bowling birthday party, so it will be nice that honoree won't be a crying scared mess. Cause that doesn't seem like the most fun for anyone really. Don did quite well, and rolled a 144 on his last game. I didn't break 100, but I did score in the 90s both times. Better than my normal 60-ish score. Logan looked around and smiled at our neighbors. We also make the grave mistake of eating lunch at the alley. All I can say is it was wrong. So wrong. I think we ate chicken strips, but really there is no telling what it was. Ugh.

Later on yesterday we made an insane trip to Ik*a and Low*s. The first was horrid. Busy, filled with clueless people blocking the isles (if you can even call them that) with carts. Madness. The second was much more calm. We bought new fire alarms and now we have four working ones in our 770 sq ft condo (one of which is also a carbon monoxide detector). I think we are prepared.

Today is rainy, actually VERY rainy for San Diego, not the typical drizzle. I would like it, but I am not working today and was hoping to get in a long walk with Don and Hoagie. Another day.

A day at the bay

We had a good time with H. Logan was a good sport and enjoyed the people watching. Photos below...

Looking around at MB

*cue angels singing*

I am far from a religious woman, but I think the incident that happened here today can only be called a miracle. Logan went down for a nap--at home--with no bouncing, rocking, getting him sleepy, or (most importantly) CRYING. Not even a peep! I put him down on his belly, said have a good nap--I'll see you when you wake up, turned on the white noise (what just a few weeks ago would have been a fatal flaw in the routine, turning on the white noise AFTER he was already in the crib), left the room, and closed the door behind me. Then he quietly fell asleep. Hallelujah! The patron saint of this miracle (is that the right terminology? anyway...) is our lovely and wonderful daycare provider Ms. T. We love her. So. Much.

Um, I hesitate to mention this, but it's 77 degrees today. Hoagie and I are going for a walk around the bay with H. Should be lovely.

Air Conditioning

I actually had to turn it on in the car today. Just sayin'.

So Logan loooooved his valentines day balloons and needed to carry them with him everywhere. Today the novelty has so worn off and he is on to bigger and better things. Climbing. Great. And covering everything in his path with snot.

I *think* he might actually be using mama in context. Don agrees and I really want it to be true. It's a tentative contextual usage.

I am so glad tomorrow is Friday. Then a three day weekend! Yippee! Oh, and tomorrow Logan will be 2 weeks away from turning 1. Holy cow. Where did the year go!?

Happy Valentines!

Better than pictures...it's video!
Sorry for the lameness in posting, everyone's been under the weather. More to come later.

Un-frickin-believable

I visit and post at a few parenting web sites, especially the ones I belonged to when we were trying for Logan and while pregnant. On one site, I "belonged" to a board where everyone was due in April. Well, since Logan came early I check out the March board sometimes as well. Both are still active and it is interesting to see how the kids and parents are growing. Sometimes though, you just have to wonder how people don't kill their kids. Seriously.

One woman from the March board gives her daughter Gerber's Graduates Chicken, Turkey or Meat Sticks every night for dinner. You know, because she LOVES them and couldn't possibly eat anything else. And for lunch this same kid eats vienna sausages heated in BUTTER. And for breakfast this 11 month old girl eats a breakfast sausage. EVERY DAY. Oh, and by the by, this baby also likes liverwurst and Spam. Spam! At 11mths old!!! So this mother goes on to ask if this might be bad for her kid. You know, she has an idea that it probably isn't the best, but her daughter just LOVES it soooooo much she can't say no.

What?!?!?!?!?!? Only slightly less disturbing is the fact that everyone who replied to her has really evaded the obvious. Duh, that is not ok! She doesn't even need to eat meat at all right now, never mind 3x a day!

Ok, parenting rant over. This one was just too much for me to let it pass.

This post was really here on Friday night...really

This is what I would have written yesterday evening...

IT'S FRIDAY!!!!! I am so looking forward to this weekend it is shameful. Nothing wrong with the job, just glad to not get up at 5am.

Did I mention we are adjusting the night time feeds here? He usually would get up to eat at 2ish and 4-5ish. I decided that he can go till 3:30-4am and that can be his only night time eating. Our first night was great, the second night resulted in a 2am argument between Don and I (you know how productive those are) but it has been much better for the last 3 nights. Yay! As I suspected, he took to it with no problem. I am glad I successfully identified when he was ready and made the change. Unfortunately teething (at glacial pace I might add) is causing a few other night time wakings, but those are Don's. So in theory I should be getting more sleep. Ha. ha.

Logan and I went to P*tsmart yesterday to get Sunshine some food and such. We went into the adoption room and he loooooved looking at all the cats. Giggles and everything. Isn't it amazing how young children are drawn to animals? He also liked the birds. And you will be very happy to hear we did not walk out with a new pet. Now that we are settled into the one pet in our house routine, it is a much happier existence for all. In fact, I am currently watching a rowdy game of "chase Sunshine around the appt." I can't imagine doing it with 3!

Whine

No pics today. I promise tomorrow.

So we have all had a cold for the last week and a half. Don of course got it "the worst" because he is, well, a guy. And it is proven that when anyone is sick in a household, the guy gets it 10-fold over everyone else. Well, funny how the two boys are recovering nicely, yet my cold has firmly planted itself into my right sinus. I even have a toothache it is so nasty. *sigh* And I really dislike my primary care Dr, so I am putting off calling or going to see him. Booo!

Logan has started to care a lot more about being right near me. When playing, he often comes over to where I am and just checks in. I don't know what was different about today, but he really was up in my business. Doesn't he know I am trying to reread The Half-Blood Prince? And I find it just as intriguing as I did the first time around? Geez, Don was on the floor and everything. I guess I am just that interesting. Hee!

He stood again unassisted today and then plopped down on his bum. He really wanted to hold onto me when he was on his own, and he gave me a particularly pouty look when he was sitting. Like "how could you do that to me?!?!" Also, I was going back and looking at some old videos and Hoagie and I watched one with Sunshine. When I said "Sunshine" in the video Logan looked right over at the real live Sunshine and giggled. Then of course he had to get down so he could go grab a chunk of fur off her tail. He doesn't quite get "gentle" yet, but we are working on it. Smart devil!

Ok, off to go immerse myself in the book and pass out at the late hour of 8pm. Woot!

Unassisted

So the boy stood unassisted several times today. Unprovoked as well. Crap. Better get those cinder blocks ready...

In other exciting news, Hoagie has gone down for a nap awake and with no crying for the last two days at daycare. Woot!

Don had a big presentation today at school and he totally aced it. As if there were any other alternative. Go Don!

Pictures tomorrow...

Bang

New roof=good
Process of getting new roof=loud
Napping when loud=bad
New roof=bad?

Nah, just inconvenient. I mean don't those people up there know that my kid is trying to sleep for a measly 45 minutes?

Logan was very much and independent player today. He only took out a small portion of his books and he was very content to noodle around with his stacking cups. He was even trying very hard to put a ring from another toy inside one of the cups. Very smart.

We all saw possibly the most beautiful San Diego sunrise ever this morning. Don and Logan from our back porch and me on the way to work. It was amazing and my view was truly magnificent. The whole bay (San Diego bay, not Mission Bay) was lit up pink. All words will fail to portray the beauty, so I will stop there.

Radio ON

Ahem...(just clearing my throat, it's rusty)

So, we are still here in the land of sunshine and nasty colds. Sorry the blog went to static for so long, and to make up for it I promise to blog every day (yes, that said EVERY DAY) until Hoagie's birthday. So almost a whole month. Granted it is the shortest month of the year, but let's not get nit-picky.

Hoagie is doing great. He is pulling up and cruising on everything. We think he may walk soon. I am considering tying cement blocks to his little legs so this doesn't happen. Bad mom? Why yes, yes, that's me. I am just getting used to the crawling! He is sooOOoooOOooOo busy. I can only imagine how nuts it will be with the walking.

Yesterday he added a new sound to his repetoire, nanananananana. Very exciting, as I think his first word just might be Na-na, which is what we call our cat. Sure, Sunshine is her given name, but one day lo 3 years ago, I said to Don, you know, as long as it sounds like Sunshine, we could really call her anything, like na-na (sung in the same lilt as her name). So I tried it out and she responded. Na-na has been around ever since. And weasel, which she also responds to, but that doesn't really have a story. She just kinda looks like a weasel to us. Anyhow, I digress. Also exciting is the fact that mamamamama has also returned. Not directed at me mind you, but it is there. I have high hopes.

Here are a few pics to pull you through until tomorrow...
